Dear Doctor, I am very confusing with medical terms: Any differences are found between Parkinsonism and PD? Is it parkinsonism look like PD's disease? what's the treatment and symptioms? Is it similar with PD? Why it names Parkinsonism ? What are the characteristics of Parkinsonism? Is it a more serious diseases than PD? How do you examine/screening the Parkinsonism on the patient? Kindly elaborate/ Thanks TEO KIM HOE

Parkinsonism is the general condition where a patient is either stiff, slow or has shaking at rest. Parkinsonism can be caused by Parkinson's disease (the most common cause), but also from other sources such as medications, strokes, brain tumors, infection, we term these secondary parkinsonism (as the parkinsonism is secondary to an idenfiable cause). The other important cause of parkinsonsim are what we call the "parkinson-plus syndromes". These are what I term the relatives of PD such as progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple systems atrophy, dementia with lewy bodies, etc. In these conditions, parkinsonism is a prominent feature, but they have other symptoms (the pluses) such as early falls (in progressive supranuclear palsy), or early dementia (in dementia with lewy bodies or lewy body disease) or poor response to sinemet (multiple systems atrophy). Sometimes, when we are not sure if the parkinsonism is due to PD, we simply call it parkinsonism. But in reality, it means the general condition of being stiff, slow and shaky. I hope this clarifies things for you. Yours,_________________Hubert H. Fernandez
